What Is It ?
VOIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. VOIP is a way to use
the internet to make phone
calls. At present phones are connected by wires to a local exchange and then the voice carried on
those wires is switched, according to the number dialled, to another set of wires belonging to the
person called. This means that to carry voice traffic a whole infrastructure has to be used just for
that purpose. VOIP uses the internet to pass the traffic instead of discrete wiring only for
voice.The
upshot of this is that, just as you can now send an e-mail to a distant land, such as Australia, you
can send your phone calls on the same path. As long as the person has the right type of equipment
to receive VOIP the call becomes almost free.Using the internet to transport your voice to a
far off
land may seem Interesting but of little value to your day to day life, true, but the benefits to an
office
or local community from this technology are far more usefull if less apparent. The buzz word is
convergance. If we use IP to transport our phone calls and we use IP to transport our computer data
we can use one set of wiring. If we use a server to keep and manage our data in the office why not
use the server to provide the phone system?
Ok, now we are talking saving lots of money. We are talking VOIP.
